Good rugged appearance. Simple to use, intuitive knobs and buttons.
I plugged in the battery, turned it on, tuned in a few AM and FM stations with no problems, switched to the NOAA band and verified that I could receive my local station with no problems. I tried out the flashlight and hand crank. I then cranked it for a few minutes to verify that the charging does work with the hand crank. I have not tried the tiny solar panel yet. Since it was displaying 2 out of 3 bars on the battery, I attached the included mini-B USB cable to a nearby charger and let it charge for a few hours. When I returned, it displayed full bars. I have not tested the runtime yet. Radio sensitivity seems fine, but I haven't tested any far away radio stations yet.
Purchased 10-2023. The battery shows a mfg date of 2021.
I noted that this can be charged by hand crank, solar panel, or USB only. If I interpreted the instructions correctly, it can also run the radio when the USB is plugged into an external source of power if the battery is dead. The radio is supposed to run for four minutes for every 1 minute of cranking.
Downsides:
The instruction manual is pretty sparse and a bit poorly written. They valued style over substance, and the print is extremely tiny.
The battery uses a proprietary connector. It will require some soldering or cutting and crimping when it's time to replace it. (The battery is a single standard 18650 rechargeable.)
This version of the radio lost a feature that I liked on the earlier radios. It no longer takes AA/AAA batteries as a backup in case the internal rechargeable battery fails. I consider that to be its largest shortcoming. For an emergency radio, you want to be able to run off of any source of power available. However, many people carry a USB power bank and it will run off of one of those for a good long while.
It would have been nice if it had a standard 12V charging port (such as a 5521 jack) and a "wall wart" 110V adapter and a 12V cigarette lighter adapter to charge it. You can use the included USB cord, but they did not include the adapters to run it from your car or your home's 110V. We all have those things around, so no big deal. They've simplified the design and made it a bit cheaper, but the reliance on rechargeable batteries and USB is a bit unsettling for an emergency radio that won't get used much. For something like this that would be put into an emergency kit and not touched for years at a time, putting some AA/AAA lithium batteries in the box and forgetting about it would be fine. Instead, according to the instructions, you have to charge it every 3 months, or the battery life will be lessened. My plan is to leave it in a sunny location so that it will trickle charge on the solar panels.
It would have been helpful to include a place to put the USB charging cable, since it is an uncommon USB Mini B (not Micro B). I will have to find a carrying case for it.
All in all, pretty solid so far. I am not detracting from the score for these shortcomings.
The first thing I tried was bluetooth. It connected instantly to my iPhone and the play/pause worked flawlessly. Another cool feature in BT mode was the tuning knob. It scrolled through you songs. The speaker was surprisingly strong.
The ambient light is a cool feature. It lit up my desk surprising well. The red and white lights worked as well as my cellphone light. A good way to conserve you cell phone battery while camping.
The Weather Band was super easy for me to set up. Press the WB button and scroll through the channels. I found my local WB broadcast within seconds. There wasn't severe weather at the tie of the review, so I cold not test the WB alert, but the concept is cool.
I did some battery charging experiments with my cellphone at an 18% charge level and the Sidekick at a fully charged level. In 15minutes the charge on my phone increased 6%. That seamed to be consistant for every 15 minutes as after an hour the Sidekick added 24% to my battery. I did not try any internal battery charging experiments with the hand crank or the solar panel, but the user manual says the solar panel will fully charge the internal battery in 14-16Hrs.
Another interesting feature is the S.A.M.E. emergency alert technology. The unit allows you to preset up to 25 different counties in your areas, or maybe different areas you may be interested in. The radio will alert you when there are emergencies broad cast by NOAA or the Emergency Alert System (EAS) in the counties that you have selected. Until I purchase this radio I was unaware of this broadcast service. I went onto Wikipedia to get the full explanation of the technology and the broadcast system. I will probably get another one of the radios to keep at my house.
Finally, the manual was extremely well written and clear. I was so happy to see this. A lot of times when I get a device with many technical features the manuals are written poorly in broken English.
The concept is great and the package is overall put together very well. However, during the end times or unrest, I do not think this is will make it in the long run.
Pros:
- Rechargeable battery that comes with it is end-user replaceable.
- Compact design that isn't too small and well put together.
To clarify my cons:
- Even when fully extended, the radio reception was marginally improved. I tried a local NJ station 95.9 which should have worked fully extended. It faintly came in. This applied to a lot of other FM stations that should have come through. At the bare minimum as a campsite radio, FM music should have worked. AM was fine extended but faintly came in while retracted. NOAA worked without antenna extended. Nothing on the SW regardless of antenna position.
- Even worse, the antenna does not appear to be end-user replaceable. My prior SW models had an antenna that can be unscrewed and replaced. This does not appear to be the case.
- The battery compartment is held on with a very fine Phillips screw that started stripping after first use inserting the AAA lithium batteries. Not sure how many cycles of open / close this door will last. There is a very high level of tension on the battery cover which makes it more challenging. It is best to replace the batteries with the solar panel on a table or flat surface versus holding in your hand. A better approach to the battery compartment would have been a tool-less mechanism to open with much less tension.

for extra lite, incase needed, also purchased a light with head band, instead of holding flashlight, leaves hands free!
